Trauma-focused therapy is an umbrella term for approaches built specifically around processing and resolving traumatic experiences, so those experiences stop driving your day-to-day reactions. Rather than only talking about what happened, trauma-focused work helps you understand how a distressing event, or a prolonged stretch of stress and threat, changed the way you think, feel, and respond, and it gives you a structured path toward relief.
I offer individualized, mental health counseling for adults in Plantation and Broward County in person, and throughout Florida by telehealth.
I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, military veteran, and founder of RPM Counseling, and trauma-focused work sits at the center of my practice.
Before becoming a counselor, I served as a Marine Corps Military Police Officer, which gave me firsthand exposure to high-pressure, high-stakes environments.
I’ve since trained more than 1,000 clinicians, peer supporters, police officers, and corporate teams in crisis response, de-escalation, and suicide prevention, and I hold certification through the American Association of Suicidology as a Suicide Autopsy Investigator, with specialized training in postvention. Read more about my background in crisis response and why clients choose to work with me.
I draw on trauma-focused approaches when clients are navigating the lasting effects of a specific overwhelming event, such as an assault, accident, or combat exposure, as well as the cumulative effects of prolonged stress, crisis work, or an unpredictable home environment.
This includes hypervigilance, emotional shutdown, irritability, difficulty trusting others, intrusive thoughts, and the survival-mode patterns that many veterans, first responders, and professionals in high-pressure roles carry long after the original stressor has passed.
Early sessions focus on building safety and understanding how trauma is showing up in your life right now, whether that’s through your body, your relationships, your sleep, or your ability to feel present.
From there, we work directly with the memories, beliefs, and patterns connected to what happened, using a pace that matches your readiness rather than pushing you faster than feels manageable.
Between sessions, I may ask you to notice specific triggers or practice grounding strategies, so the safety we build in session carries into daily life.
Clients I work with through trauma-focused approaches often notice a real reduction in hypervigilance and reactivity, along with a clearer sense of what is actually happening in the present versus what their nervous system learned to expect from the past.
Many describe feeling steadier in relationships, less controlled by intrusive memories, and more able to trust their own judgment again. For clients coming from military, law enforcement, or first responder backgrounds, this often means feeling less alone in carrying what the work asked of them.
This approach tends to be a good fit if a specific event, or a pattern of chronic stress and threat, still feels present in your body or your reactions, even if the situation itself is long over. You don’t need a formal PTSD diagnosis to benefit, and many high-functioning adults seek this kind of counseling while still managing work and family responsibilities. A free consultation is the best place to start if you’re unsure whether trauma-focused work is the right entry point.
Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to start trauma-focused therapy? No. Many adults seek this kind of counseling because they feel reactive, shut down, or stuck in survival-mode patterns, without a formal diagnosis.
Is trauma-focused therapy only for a single traumatic event? No. It can address a single distressing event as well as the cumulative effects of prolonged stress, crisis exposure, or a difficult childhood environment.
Can trauma-focused therapy help if I’m still functioning at work? Yes. Many clients continue managing responsibilities while internally carrying hypervigilance, emotional fatigue, or reactivity that trauma-focused work can address directly.
Do you offer trauma-focused therapy by telehealth? Yes. Telehealth counseling is available throughout Florida, in addition to in-person sessions in Plantation and Broward County.
I provide in-person counseling in Plantation, Florida, and serve adults throughout Broward County, including Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Sunrise, Coral Springs, Tamarac, and nearby South Florida communities. Telehealth counseling is available throughout Florida.
