Autism Counseling for Adults in Plantation, Florida

Autism in adults does not always look like the version most people picture. Many autistic adults are socially capable, verbally skilled, employed, and, on paper, doing well, while privately spending enormous energy managing sensory sensitivities, monitoring social interactions, and adjusting themselves to fit environments that were not built with them in mind.

That effort, often called masking or camouflaging, can hold up for a long time, sometimes for an entire career, before it catches up in the form of burnout, anxiety, or exhaustion that doesn’t make sense given how “fine” things look from the outside.

I offer individualized, mental health counseling for adults in Plantation and Broward County in person, and throughout Florida by telehealth.

Why Choose Us

How I Use Autism Counseling

I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 10 years of experience helping adults manage autism-related challenges, anxiety, chronic stress, and burnout, much of it with high-achieving professionals navigating demanding, high-pressure work environments. My own background in high-performance settings, from military service to training corporate teams and first responders in crisis response, gives me a practical, structured lens on the toll that constant masking and sensory overload take, both at work and in relationships. Read more about my background and why clients choose to work with me.

My work with autistic adults centers on the real-world costs of masking and sensory overload, most often in the workplace, and how that spills into relationships when there’s little energy left to show up as yourself. I draw on person-centered counseling as the foundation, so the goal is never to make you seem less autistic, and bring in cognitive behavioral (CBT), acceptance and commitment (ACT), and mindfulness-based techniques to manage burnout, anxiety, and the exhaustion that builds from prolonged masking.

High-Achieving Adults and Autism

A significant number of the autistic adults I work with are high achievers: professionals, executives, veterans, and first responders who have built successful careers, often specifically in high-pressure environments where precision, structure, and performance are rewarded. That success can make autism easy to miss, in yourself and in the people around you, because it doesn’t match the outdated picture of what autism is supposed to look like.

Psychology Today, writing on masking, puts it plainly: “Neurodivergent people often burn out because they have been performing too hard.” The exhaustion that shows up after years of high achievement is frequently the cost of that performance, not a separate problem layered on top of it.

Because my own background is in high-pressure, high-structure environments, from military service to training corporate teams and first responders in crisis response, I have direct familiarity with the specific culture many high-achieving autistic clients are navigating: one that rewards output and composure while offering very little room to acknowledge what that composure actually costs.

What Autism Counseling Can Help With

  • Burnout from long-term masking or camouflaging
  • Sensory overload and the fatigue of managing it in daily environments
  • Difficulty knowing which preferences or behaviors are genuinely yours versus adopted to fit in
  • Workplace strain connected to social expectations or unstated norms
  • Anxiety or exhaustion that doesn’t match how “fine” things look from the outside
  • Processing a recent autism diagnosis or exploring self-identification as an adult
  • Anxiety or depression connected to long-term masking or burnout

What Autism Counseling Looks Like in Session

Early sessions focus on understanding how autism shows up specifically for you: where masking happens automatically, where it’s most costly, and what areas of your life feel the most exhausting to sustain.

From there, we work on identifying where you have room to reduce masking, building sensory and environmental accommodations that actually fit your life, and addressing the anxiety, shame, or burnout that often accumulates after years of performing.

Between sessions, I may ask you to notice specific moments of masking or sensory overload as they happen, so the work stays connected to your actual daily life instead of staying confined to the therapy room.

Benefits of Autism Counseling

  • A clearer understanding of your own masking patterns and their cost
  • Reduced burnout through more sustainable accommodations at work and at home
  • Less shame or self-criticism connected to sensory or social needs
  • Better emotional regulation during sensory or social overwhelm
  • A greater sense of clarity about which preferences and responses are genuinely yours

Is Autism Counseling Right for You?

This counseling tends to be a good fit whether you have a formal autism diagnosis, suspect you may be autistic and haven’t been evaluated, or simply recognize the patterns of masking and burnout described above, especially if you’ve built a high-achieving life that leaves little visible room to acknowledge the effort behind it. It’s not the only approach I use; depending on your goals, this work is often combined with CBT, ACT, and mindfulness-based techniques.

A free consultation is the best place to start if you’re not sure whether counseling, a formal evaluation, or both make sense for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you diagnose autism?

No. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I don’t provide formal autism diagnostic testing. A formal diagnosis typically comes from a psychologist or neuropsychologist through structured evaluation. Counseling can still help even without a formal diagnosis, and I can help you think through whether a referral for evaluation makes sense for you.

Do I need a diagnosis to start counseling?

No. I work with adults who have a formal autism diagnosis as well as adults who identify with autistic traits but haven’t been formally evaluated.

Is this counseling focused on changing autistic traits?

No. The goal is not to make you appear less autistic. It’s to reduce the cost of masking, manage burnout and sensory overload, and help you build a life and work environment that actually fits how you function.

Is autism counseling available by telehealth?

Yes. Telehealth counseling is available throughout Florida, in addition to in-person sessions in Plantation and Broward County.
