Marriage Counselor Near You in Plantation, Florida

Most marriages don’t reach a breaking point overnight. More often, distance builds slowly. The same argument keeps coming back, conversations turn into standoffs, one of you pushes to talk while the other shuts down, and eventually it feels easier to avoid each other than to try again.

As a marriage counselor, I work one-on-one with you on your side of the marriage: how you communicate under stress, what tends to trigger conflict or withdrawal, and what you want to be different. You can’t control your spouse, but changing how you respond often changes how the whole relationship functions.

This page describes individual counseling focused on your marriage. It is not couples counseling, and sessions are one-on-one with me.

I offer individual marriage counseling for adults in Plantation and Broward County in person, and throughout Florida by telehealth.

Marriage Counselor in Plantation

Why Choose Us

How I Approach Marriage Therapy

I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 10 years of experience helping adults manage conflict, chronic stress, emotional shutdown, and the effects of trauma, all of which show up in marriages. My approach to marriage therapy is practical and structured. We look closely at the cycle you and your spouse get caught in, what you’re reacting to, and what you can do differently the next time it starts. I use cognitive behavioral (CBT) techniques to work through the assumptions that drive reactive communication, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), in which I’m certified, to help you act on what matters to you in the marriage even when emotions run high. Read more about why clients choose to work with me.

My background shapes this work. I’ve trained more than 1,000 clinicians, corporate teams, and police officers in crisis response and de-escalation, and those same skills help when a disagreement at home escalates in seconds. As a Marine Corps veteran, I also understand the added strain that military service, first responder shifts, and high-pressure careers can place on a marriage.

You’ll work directly with me from the first consultation onward, so you won’t be passed between a rotating team of providers. Weekday appointments run until 7 PM, with Saturday sessions by appointment.

What Marital Counseling Can Help With

  • Recurring arguments with your spouse that follow the same pattern
  • Difficulty expressing needs or frustration without it turning into a fight
  • Emotional shutdown or withdrawal during conflict
  • Healing after an affair or betrayal, whether you were betrayed or had the affair
  • Feeling disconnected, lonely, or unseen in your marriage
  • Stress around finances, parenting, household roles, or in-laws
  • Marriage strain from demanding careers, military service, or first responder work
  • Adjusting to a new baby, a move, or becoming a stepparent
  • Getting clear on what you want from your marriage going forward
  • Marriage stress connected to anxiety, depression, or trauma

What Marital Therapy Looks Like in Session

Early sessions focus on what brought you in: the specific patterns causing strain in your marriage, what tends to trigger them, and what you want to change. We set clear goals based on what’s within your control.

From there, we examine what’s driving your side of the pattern, often assumptions, past experiences, or stress responses, and practice more direct ways of communicating with your spouse. When you notice yourself flooding or shutting down, nervous-system-based skills help you stay grounded enough to keep the conversation productive.

Between sessions, I may ask you to try a new approach with your spouse in a real situation, such as raising a concern earlier or repairing after an argument, so the work carries into your marriage instead of staying in my office.

Benefits of Marriage Counseling

Clients I work with often notice:

  • A clearer understanding of their own triggers and patterns in the marriage
  • Calmer, more direct conversations with their spouse
  • Less emotional shutdown or escalation during conflict
  • More confidence about what they need and how to ask for it
  • Skills that continue to be useful long after counseling ends

Is Marriage Counseling Right for You?

Individual marriage counseling tends to be a good fit if you keep running into the same difficulties with your spouse and want to understand and change your part in the pattern. It’s also a good option when your spouse isn’t ready or willing to attend counseling. If there is physical violence, threats, or coercion in your marriage, safety comes first. Call 911 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

If you’re not married yet, premarital counseling may be a better fit, and if you’re considering ending the marriage, divorce counseling can help you think it through. For communication concerns that extend beyond your marriage, see relationship and communication counseling. A free consultation is the best place to start if you’re not sure which option makes sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Offer Couples Counseling?

No. Marriage counseling with me is individual, one-on-one counseling focused on your side of the marriage, not joint sessions with your spouse. Even so, working on your own communication patterns, triggers, and responses frequently changes how the marriage functions. If you and your spouse want joint sessions, I’m glad to help you find a couples therapist, and some clients see me individually while attending couples counseling elsewhere.

How Do I Find a Marriage Counselor?

If you’re wondering how to find a marriage therapist, or where to get marriage counseling, start by deciding whether you want individual or joint sessions. For individual support, look for a licensed professional who explains their approach clearly and offers a consultation before you commit.

What Should I Look for in the Best Marriage Counselors?

The best marriage counselors are the ones you feel comfortable being honest with. Look for a licensed counselor for marriage who keeps sessions structured and gives you practical tools to use between sessions. The best marriage counseling near you should also fit your schedule, budget, and background. I work with clients from many cultural backgrounds, including African American, Indian American, and other multicultural and immigrant clients, and I make room for the family and cultural expectations you bring into your marriage. Some clients, especially men who are new to counseling, prefer working with a male marriage counselor. To decide whether I’m the best marriage counselor near you, read client reviews or schedule a free consultation with a professional marriage counselor before committing.

What Is the Difference Between a Marriage Counselor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and a Marriage Psychologist?

Several types of licensed professionals provide marriage counseling. A licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) holds a license focused on couples and family systems, a marriage psychologist holds a doctoral license in psychology, and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), like me, is licensed to provide counseling and psychotherapy. I’m not an LMFT or a psychologist. For individual work on your marriage, what matters more is the counselor’s training and approach, how comfortable you feel, and whether the work is grounded in the same evidence-based methods that psychology-based marriage counseling draws on.

If you’re looking for marriage and family therapy near you, or marriage and family therapists near you who offer family and marital counseling in joint sessions, I’m happy to help you find a family marriage counselor or other marriage and family counselors who offer that format.

How Much Does Marriage Counseling Cost, and Is Free Marriage Counseling Available?

For counseling, I accept Aetna, Cigna, Florida Blue, TRICARE, Curative, and UnitedHealthcare. Insurance typically covers individual counseling when sessions address a mental health condition you’re being treated for, such as anxiety or depression connected to your marriage. I’ll personally verify your benefits before the first session, so you know your costs ahead of time. Sessions that aren’t connected to a mental health condition, including marriage coaching, are private-pay at $160 per session.

If you’re comparing affordable marriage counseling or low-cost marriage counseling options, using your insurance benefits is usually the most cost-effective route. If you’re looking for affordable marriage counseling near you and aren’t sure what your plan covers, we can review it together during your free consultation. Ongoing sessions aren’t free, but every new client can start with a free consultation. If you’re searching for free marriage counseling near you because cost is the main barrier, some community organizations in Broward County offer no-cost programs, and I’m glad to point you in the right direction.

What Happens in a Marriage Counseling Session?

Sessions are one-on-one. We check in on what’s happened in your marriage since we last met, then focus on one specific pattern or conflict. I help you sort out what you were reacting to, what you actually meant to say, and how you want to handle it next time. Most clients leave with one practical skill or conversation to try at home. My marriage counseling services are designed to provide structured marriage guidance, so each session builds on the last.

Successful marriage counseling usually depends on showing up consistently, being honest with yourself, and practicing skills between sessions. Counseling for marriage doesn’t mean you’ll stop disagreeing with your spouse. It means you’ll handle disagreements in a way that doesn’t damage the relationship.

Can Marriage Counseling Help With Infidelity or Betrayal?

Yes. If you were betrayed, individual affair recovery counseling near you can help with the intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and emotional flooding that often follow, and with deciding what you want next without rushing. If you had the affair, counseling helps you understand what led to it, take accountability, and figure out how to rebuild trust or move forward honestly. Because betrayal often produces trauma-like reactions, my trauma-informed background is especially useful here. If you’re looking for a betrayal therapist near you in Broward County, I do this work both in person and by telehealth.

Do You Address Intimacy and Sexual Concerns?

Yes, within individual counseling. Intimacy often fades when a spouse feels unheard, stressed, or resentful. As an intimacy counselor, I help you understand how emotional distance, stress, and physical connection affect each other in your marriage, and how to raise the topic with your spouse without blame. I’m not a certified sex therapist, so if a concern calls for specialized marriage sex therapy, such as a medical or sexual-function issue, I’ll help you find a qualified referral.

Do You Offer Online Marriage Counseling?

Yes. Telehealth marriage counseling is available anywhere in Florida over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, which helps when work schedules or travel make in-person sessions difficult. If you’d prefer an online marriage counselor, or you’re looking for online marriage counseling near you, the process is the same as in person, and marriage coaching online follows the same format. You need to be located in Florida during sessions.

What Is the Difference Between Marriage Coaching and Marriage Counseling?

Marriage counseling can address marriage stress alongside mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, and may be covered by insurance. Marriage coaching is forward-focused and skills-based, and it fits clients who want to strengthen their marriage without addressing a mental health condition. As a marriage coach, I use a structured, goal-based format tailored to you instead of a packaged marriage coaching program, and marriage communication coaching is where many clients start.

Men who are hesitant about counseling often find this direct, practical style easier to engage with. You can read client reviews or learn more about my men’s counseling work. If you’re comparing marriage coaches near you or looking for a marriage coach near you, marriage coaching near you is available in person in Plantation, and like many marriage coaches, I also offer sessions online throughout Florida.
