Life coaching tends to be a good fit if you’re generally functioning well day to day and want help with direction, motivation, structure, or a specific goal. It works best when you’re ready to take an active role, try new approaches between sessions, and be honest about what’s getting in the way.
Coaching isn’t a substitute for mental health treatment. If anxiety, depression, trauma, or grief is making daily life hard to manage, counseling may be a better starting point, and because I’m a licensed counselor, we can talk through which approach makes the most sense. A free consultation is the easiest way to figure out whether life coaching, counseling, or a combination of the two is the right fit.
What’s the difference between a life coach and a therapist?
A life coach focuses on the present and the future: setting goals, building habits, and moving toward the life you want. A therapist or counselor is trained to assess and treat mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, or PTSD. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who also offers life coaching, I can work with you in a coaching format while recognizing when counseling would serve you better. If you’ve been looking for a life coach and therapist in one, that combination of clinical training and a goal-focused coaching format is what I offer. For clarity, I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, not a psychologist.
Are you a certified life coach?
Life coaching isn’t a licensed profession in Florida, and coaching certifications vary widely in their requirements. My credentials come from mental health counseling: I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 10 years of experience, certified in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with additional training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) techniques. When you’re comparing life coach qualifications, it’s worth asking about each coach’s education, experience, and what they do if a goal turns out to be tied to a mental health concern.
How much does a life coach cost, and is life coaching covered by insurance?
If what you’re working on turns out to be a better fit for counseling, I accept Aetna, Cigna, Florida Blue, TRICARE, Curative, and UnitedHealthcare for counseling services. If you’re looking for life coaching that isn’t connected to a mental health condition, sessions are private-pay at $160 each. Because coaching isn’t treatment for a diagnosed condition, it generally isn’t covered by health insurance, but you’ll know the full cost before we begin.
How do I find the right life coach in my area?
Start with fit. Look for a coach whose background matches what you’re working on, who explains clearly how sessions are structured, and who is upfront about when coaching isn’t the right tool. It also helps to know who you’ll actually be working with. Some coaching companies and platforms match you with whoever is available, but at RPM Counseling you work directly with me. My office is at 8551 W Sunrise Blvd in Plantation, and a free consultation gives you a chance to ask questions before committing.
Do you offer online life coaching?
Yes. Virtual life coach sessions are available to adults anywhere in Florida and follow the same structure as in-person sessions in Plantation. You can also combine the two, meeting in person when it’s convenient and online when your schedule gets busy. Learn more about telehealth.
Who do you work with as a life coach?
I work with adults 18 and older, including young adults finding their direction in their 20s, college students, parents, professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, and adults approaching retirement. I have particular experience working with men, veterans and first responders, and professionals in high-pressure careers, and I also coach women navigating career changes, parenthood, and major life transitions. Common focus areas include career direction, leadership, relationships, life after divorce, and finding a clearer sense of purpose.
Can a life coach help with ADHD or autism?
Yes. Coaching can be a good fit for adults with ADHD and for autistic and other neurodivergent adults who want practical support with structure, organization, time management, and follow-through. The focus is on building systems that fit how your brain works. If you’re also dealing with burnout, anxiety, or the exhaustion that can come from masking, ADHD counseling or autism counseling for adults may help alongside or before coaching.
Can life coaching help with anxiety, depression, or trauma?
Coaching can help with stress, motivation, and confidence, and my approach is trauma-informed and draws on mindfulness and somatic techniques. However, coaching isn’t a treatment for anxiety disorders, depression, or PTSD. If any of those are significantly affecting your life, anxiety counseling, depression counseling, or trauma counseling is likely a better fit, and we can talk that through during your consultation.
What happens in life coaching sessions, and how long does coaching take?
Your first session is a conversation about where you are, where you want to be, and what has been getting in the way. After that, sessions focus on specific goals, progress, and adjustments to the plan. How long coaching lasts depends on your goals. Some clients work toward one focused outcome over a shorter period, while others use coaching to stay steady through a longer transition.
How do I know if I need a life coach, and how do I get started?
If you keep circling the same goals without making progress, feel stuck after a major change, or want an outside perspective and real accountability, a life coach can help. Getting started is simple. Every new client can schedule a free consultation to talk through goals, ask questions, and decide whether life coaching, counseling, or a combination makes the most sense.
