Premarital Counseling Near You in Plantation, Florida

The months before a wedding tend to be full of planning, but very little of that planning goes into preparing yourself for the marriage. Premarital counseling gives you space to think through what you bring into the relationship: how you handle conflict and stress, what you expect around money, family, and roles, and what you learned about marriage growing up.

This page describes individual premarital counseling. It is not couples counseling, and sessions are one-on-one with me. The work focuses on you, so you enter your marriage with clearer expectations, stronger communication skills, and a better understanding of your own patterns.

I offer individual premarital counseling in Plantation and Broward County in person, and throughout Florida by telehealth.

Why Choose Us

Pre-Marriage Counseling With a Practical, Structured Approach

I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 10 years of experience helping adults navigate major life transitions, and entering a marriage is one of the biggest. My pre-marriage counseling is structured and goal-focused. We identify the topics most likely to create friction in your marriage and work through your side of each one, so you can bring those conversations to your partner with clarity. Read more about why clients choose to work with me.

I’m certified in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which centers on clarifying your values and acting on them. That makes it a natural fit for defining what you want your marriage to stand for before the wedding. My background in crisis response and de-escalation also means we spend real time on how you handle conflict, which is one of the areas that matters most as the years go on.

You’ll work directly with me from the first consultation through your last session, with weekday appointments until 7 PM and Saturday sessions by appointment.

What Pre-Marital Counseling Covers

  • Your communication style and how you handle stress
  • How you react in conflict and how to repair after an argument
  • Your expectations and habits around money, spending, and debt
  • What you expect around roles, household responsibilities, and careers
  • Family-of-origin patterns you want to keep or change
  • Boundaries with extended family and in-laws
  • Your hopes and concerns about children and parenting
  • Preparing for a second marriage, a blended family, or becoming a stepparent
  • Pre-wedding anxiety, doubts, or cold feet
  • What military, first responder, or other high-pressure careers ask of you or your spouse

What Premarital Counseling Looks Like in Session

Early sessions focus on your relationship and where you are in it: what’s working well, where you already notice tension, and what you want to be prepared for. From there, we choose the topics that matter most and work through them in a structured way.

In session, I help you put your expectations into words, notice assumptions you may not have examined, and practice how to raise important topics with your partner. Many clients discover expectations they’d never said out loud, like how they think about saving money or spending holidays with family, and leave with a plan for talking about them.

Between sessions, I may ask you to have a specific conversation with your partner and reflect on how it went, so the skills become part of how you relate day to day. Premarital counseling is usually short term, and some clients return for a check-in during their first year of marriage.

Benefits of Premarital Counseling

Clients I work with often notice:

  • A clearer understanding of what they expect from marriage and why
  • More confidence raising difficult topics with their partner
  • Practical tools for handling disagreements calmly
  • Awareness of family patterns they want to carry forward or leave behind
  • Skills that continue to be useful long after counseling ends

Is Premarital Counseling Right for You?

Individual premarital counseling tends to be a good fit if you’re engaged, considering engagement, or one of the newlyweds in your first year of marriage, and you want to prepare yourself for the relationship. It’s also helpful if you’re entering a second marriage, blending families, or feeling anxious or uncertain before the wedding. If you and your partner want joint premarital sessions, I’m glad to help you find a couples counselor, and some clients do both.

If you’re already married and working through ongoing conflict, marriage counseling is likely the better fit.

Premarital counseling is private-pay at $160 per session, since it isn’t treatment for a diagnosed condition. A free consultation is the best place to start if you’d like to talk through what premarital sessions would look like for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Premarital Counseling?

Premarital counseling, also called pre-marriage counseling or premarital counselling, is short-term, structured counseling that helps you prepare for marriage. With me, it’s individual: sessions cover communication, conflict, finances, family, and long-term goals from your side of the relationship.

Can I Do Pre-Marital Counseling Without My Partner?

Yes, and that’s how I work. Individual pre-marital counseling is useful when your partner is busy, lives elsewhere, or isn’t interested in counseling, or when you want space to sort through your own expectations and doubts first. Many of the changes that matter most in a marriage start with how each person communicates and handles stress.

When Should I Start Premarital Counseling?

Ideally, start a few months before the wedding, when you have time to work through topics without the pressure of final planning. That said, premarital counseling is useful at any point, including a few weeks before the wedding or during your first year of marriage.

How Do I Find the Best Premarital Counseling?

First decide whether you want individual or joint sessions, then look for a licensed counselor who follows a clear structure and makes you feel comfortable speaking openly. If you’re looking for individual premarital counseling in Broward County, my office is in Plantation, and sessions are also available by telehealth throughout Florida. You can read client reviews or schedule a free consultation to see whether the fit feels right.

What Is the Difference Between Premarital Counseling and Premarital Coaching?

Premarital coaching is typically focused on skills and planning, while premarital counseling can also address individual history, anxiety, or past relationship experiences that affect how you show up in a marriage. The way I work with clients before marriage blends both, and either way, sessions are private-pay.

Is Premarital Counseling Available by Telehealth?

Yes. Telehealth premarital sessions are available anywhere in Florida over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You need to be located in Florida during sessions.
